The Cannabis Industry Is Helping To Clean Up Ocean Plastic, Here’s How

April 12, 2019

The cannabis industry is participating in global efforts to make our world a better place. Set to launch this spring 2019 is Sana Packaging’s new product line that is dedicated to helping clean up the planet’s beautiful oceans.

“The way we think about sustainability, disposable products, and waste recovery needs to evolve. It’s time to change the narrative.” – Sana Packaging

Who is Sana Packaging? A startup company that designs and develops differentiated, sustainable and compliant packaging solutions for the cannabis industry. Their original product line of packaging items uses 100 percent plant-based hemp plastic with no added chemicals. The plant-based hemp plastic is biodegradable. However, the company is hoping to create compostable plant-based plastics that fully break down within 3-6 months instead of a few years.

They have recently announced a partnership with Oceanworks – a company that partners with collection and processing agents around the world to bring trusted sources of ocean plastic materials to consumers eager to use their purchasing power to make a difference. Their collaboration has brought about a new line of reclaimed ocean plastic cannabis packaging made from 100% repurposed plastic.

Sana Packaging now has two packaging options,

Ron Basak-Smith, co-founder and CEO of Sana Packaging, said:

“We’re extremely excited about working with Oceanworks. This is an incredible opportunity to help clean our oceans and protect some of our planet’s most fragile ecosystems. While HEMP bioplastics will remain our core focus, ocean plastic is a problem we have to address.”

Six of the 10 states with legal recreational cannabis are coastal states – seven counting Michigan, which borders four of the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, cannabis packaging waste is already making headlines in these (and other) places. Over 8 million metric tons of plastic enters our oceans every year, ocean plastic is a global crisis we have a responsibility to address. Which is why Sana Packaging has decided to do something about it.

By working together with Oceanworks Inc. they will accelerate the removal of ocean plastic with the long-term goal of a plastic-free ocean. They have already removed four tons – 8,000 pounds – of plastic waste from the ocean and used it to create pre-roll tubes, one of the most ubiquitous cannabis waste products around.

The products made with this plastic include:

  • 70mm Sana Tubes that are ideal for single vaporizer cartridges and mini pre-rolls.
  • 110mm Sana Tubes that can fit up to a king size pre-roll, vaporizer cartridges, or a 10cm vaporizer pen.
  • Sana Containers that are child-resistant and suitable for concentrates, vaporizer cartridges, and edible capsules, mints, and gummies. They can store up to 3.5 grams of flower and the lid doubles as a rolling tray.

This proud to be a “Made in the USA” company is doing the right thing, and doing it locally, supporting their people and keeping their country clean. They are committed to supporting domestic agriculture and domestic manufacturing, and their commitment to sustainability goes beyond simply offering ecologically conscious products. They envision a world where our bodies, natural environment, and oceans are not polluted with toxic waste. They believe packaging should be regenerative and help heal the environment throughout its lifecycle.
