Plastics are part of our everyday life. A miracle product in many ways, which has gotten out of control and threatens our environment. Startup businesses throughout the world are helping to provide alternatives to plastics, and, soon, some of these companies are coming to Telluride. Telluride Venture Accelerator (TVA), an initiative of the Telluride Foundation, is pleased to announce its first 2019 “boot camp”, which will focus on plastic alternative companies in partnership with the Town of Telluride’s Ecology Commission and the Town of Mountain Village’s, Green Team. This bootcamp will run from March 18th through March 29th, culminating with company presentations along with a film screening of Albatross, co-hosted with Sheep Mountain Alliance, on March 26th at 4pm at the Nugget Theater.

In March, six companies will spend two weeks in Telluride connecting with experienced mentors and local businesses and learning what they need to take their business to the next level. Company founders are both local, from Telluride and Ridgway, and from greater Colorado, as well as from North Carolina, Ohio and California. TVA is bringing together entrepreneurs across industries and business models, which are all addressing the global issue of plastic reduction. Telluride continues to be at the forefront of communities supporting innovation that improves not only the lives of residents, but also the greater global community.

The six companies participating in the plastics reduction boot camp include:

LimeLoop - Reimagines the way products are sent and received. Using upcycled billboard vinyl, we've created, lightweight, durable, and returnable shippers to reduce reliance on cardboard and plastic and get us closer to a circular economy.

Plaine Products - Offers vegan personal care products in aluminum bottles that can be easily returned to be sterilized, refilled and reused.

Final Straw - Replaces wasteful single-use plastic items with fun, easy to use, socially responsible, badass products, shifting society towards a more sustainable future.

Panji - Makes eco-friendly materials that provide alternatives to hard-shell plastics, using Basalt, Flax and Paper Pulp.

Vessel Revolution - Enables a reusable cup system, disrupting industry & the status quo of to-go.

Sana Packaging: Differentiated, sustainable, and compliant packaging solutions for the cannabis industry made from 100% plant-based hemp plastic and 100% reclaimed ocean plastic .

TVA has evolved its entrepreneurship ecosystem building model, focusing on shorter duration boot camps and involving companies solving specific challenges. By creating a platform to accelerate innovation and attract unique solutions from around the world, TVA can create a testing ground for large scale, disruptive ideas and private market solutions for fundamental community challenges like plastic alternatives, environment, energy, transportation, etc. In addition, future boot camps focused on topics such as growth, leadership, and funding will provide an intensive mentor supported crash course on practical solutions for entrepreneurs.
