Meet The Founders: Sana Packaging
March 21, 2017
Sana Packaging is an alternative to the plastic packaging options available in the cannabis industry, experimenting with hemp-based materials to decrease the carbon footprint and non-biodegradable waste output of packaged goods.
Founders & Hometowns: Ron Basak-Smith (Easton, CT) and James Eichner (Montagnola, Switzerland)
How did you develop the concept for Sana Packaging?
This idea was developed while taking a Sustainable Venturing class at the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business. We were classmates and discussed the idea of sustainable packaging over the summer; once we were both back in town after the break, we started to work on our idea and vision for Sana Packaging.
What problem does your business solve in the cannabis industry?
Currently, there is a lack of sustainable and differentiated packaging options in the cannabis industry.
Why did you decide to apply to the Canopy Accelerator program?
In the early stages of our business plan development, we knew that we needed to talk to folks in the industry and thought Canopy would be a good resource. We contacted Canopy and were able to set up a meeting with Canopy COO Micah Tapman. This meeting was incredibly informative and we believed an opportunity with Canopy would be valuable to us in getting our business off the ground!
What element of the Canopy program are you most excited about?
The time and guidance it will give us to develop our business plan and refine our pitch.
What do you like best about the industry?
You work a lot. What do you do when you're not practicing your pitch for Sana?
We are both avid skiers, and when we're not on the slopes we both enjoy live music.
