5 Ways to Celebrate the Beauty of Earth Day
April 22, 2019
Remember – Earth Day isn’t just one day. Your efforts every day make a difference to your world, your future, and your community.
With 4/20 behind us, it’s time to appreciate another special spring holiday: Earth Day. Although Earth Day is not celebrated everywhere, it should be! Even brands like The North Face are calling for the day to be a national holiday.
“The North Face is no stranger to exploration and this Earth Day we are proud to join our partners and fellow explorers in a global effort to make Earth Day a national holiday,” said Tim Bantle, global general manager of lifestyle at The North Face. “We believe that when people take time to appreciate the earth, they feel more connected to it and are more likely to protect it. Explore Mode urges us to unplug from our digital lives to connect in real life to the world, each other, and ourselves in the effort to move the world forward.” (Yahoo)
What is Earth Day? The Earth Day Network’s President, Kathleen Roger explains:
“On April 22, 1970, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development. Earth Day is now a global event each year, and we believe that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.”
How can you get involved on a local level to show your support for this important day? Here are five ideas.
5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in Your Community
Enjoy Some Fresh Air
Sure, you leave the house and commute every day, or run errands, but how often do you really take time to appreciate the fresh air and feel the environment around you? Take a walk and just observe – no cell phone, music optional – what do you see? What do you hear? What do the plants look like around you? Take a deep breath – how does the air feel as it fills your lungs?
Do you normally drink water from plastic disposable bottles? While it can be convenient, it can not only be costly to both your wallet and our greater environment. All it takes is switching your plastic for a reusable water bottle, which you can personalize and take with you wherever you go!
Try to conserve in other areas as well, like taking shorter showers or skipping watering your lawn.
Cultivate Your Garden
If doing a big community project sounds a bit too involved, why not start closer to home? Spring is the perfect time to work on a garden, no matter the size! If you have the space to grow outdoors, take advantage. Pick out some native plants and flowers to attract a wide range of biodiversity, especially bees! Start small or go big, just make it beautiful and yours.
Look for Sustainable Packaging Options
Becoming more aware of your impact and the products you purchase is of crucial importance. Seek out products that are housed in sustainable packaging with minimal waste.
